No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
